Tesla's Austin Robotaxi Fleet Returns to 8 Active Vehicles Following September Event

Fleet tracking data revealed that Tesla's actively operating autonomous vehicles in Austin have returned to initial launch levels. On 3 September 2026, Tesla held a Cybercab launch event in Austin that attracted supporters and social media influencers, generating a wave of first-ride videos from the steering-wheel-free vehicles.

The event produced a sharp fleet spike, with unique Tesla robotaxis carrying passengers exceeding 100 units in early September, up from the 20-to-40 range sustained throughout most of the year. This elevation proved temporary. By 22 September, the seven-day active count declined to 8 vehicles, matching levels from the service's June 2025 inception.

Data exposed a substantial gap between officially registered vehicles and those actually operating. Tesla registered 476 Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, comprising 409 Model Ys and 67 Cybercabs, a gain of 285 units over the preceding 30 days. These figures illustrate the distinction between administrative registration and actual operations. While Tesla continues adding vehicles to its fleet on paper, the genuine number of cars operating simultaneously has remained essentially flat since service inception 15 months prior. The event generated a week-long surge in online ride videos before activity contracted back to baseline operational levels once external attention subsided.
