BYD's Great Seagull Makes Public Debut Ahead of Late 2026 Launch

Undisguised images of the BYD Great Seagull electric vehicle have surfaced publicly for the first time, confirming the company's expansion plans for the Seagull family. The new model received approval from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, with specifications indicating substantial growth over the current variant.

The new vehicle measures 4,205 mm in length compared to 3,780 mm for the existing Seagull, representing a considerable size increase. It will feature a 95 kW (127 horsepower) electric motor, a significant step up from the 55 kW output in the current model. A roof-mounted LiDAR system suggests availability of advanced driver assistance technology.

The Great Seagull is expected to incorporate Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology, enabling 10 to 70 percent recharge in five minutes. The refreshed interior reveals a larger infotainment display, redesigned center console, and a two-spoke steering wheel. The "Great" naming convention aligns with BYD's recent strategy applied to models such as Great Han and Great Tang.

BYD's Ocean series sales leader confirmed the new model will reach customers before the end of 2026. While international plans remain unconfirmed, the larger variant is anticipated to launch overseas as a variant of the Dolphin Surf platform. The expansion positions the electric hatchback to compete with vehicles such as the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo and Renault Megane in key markets.
